How GKN people are helping

Child in mothers arms

GKN Mission Everest challenged us to do more for our communities and bring hope to the children of Africa and is a project of which we are all proud of.

During 2007 GKN people contributed an extra $1.7 million to their local communities in the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific. GKN promised to match the value of the extra community work and fundraising around the Group and has committed $1 million to Africa - $500k in 2007 and $500k more in 2008.

Together we will have contributed $2.7 million to try and help make the world a better place for people in need.

Keeping our promises – that’s the GKN Way.

Aiding a special needs school in China

GKN Wheels Liuzhou has provided help, assistance and equipment for a special needs school in the Liubei District of Liuzhou, in South China’s Guangxi Province.

The privately owned school – which has 64 children and is run by a retired teacher – is in very poor condition and urgently needs renovation and building work, as well as new furniture and equipment. So far, GKN has bought the school educational toys and a computer, as well as wall and ceiling mounted fans – which were then installed by GKN volunteers. All these gifts were presented on United Nations Children’s Day (1 June). Volunteers are also due to plaster and paint the school.

On 16th June GKN also organised a special outing for the children – with 25 GKN employees accompanying 50 children for a fun morning at the zoo. “It was a great day for the children and adults alike and helped the employees to understand and appreciate these special children even more. Local TV and news journalists covered the event, encouraging more people to get involved in the community,” commented William Lambert, General Manager, GKN Wheels Liuzhou.
