Now for an update! 15/2/2007
Gilo has the machine ready to fly at last...we are just waiting for a weather window.
We leave for the Alps in a few weeks- we have all the kit assembled and ready...just bought new bail out rigs which fit better into our paramotor harnesses than our conventional skydiving rigs with only a reserve.
We have also now got all the little niggles of kit as well.. i.e.: anti misters, glow sticks, crampons, thermals, hand warmers, altimeters, etc. We have also gone through in minute detail with High & Wild all the logistical details of getting us ready out in Nepal including briefing times with the Air authorities in Lukla for the issuing of call signs for us and air traffic clearances etc.
Channel Four & Discovery Channel have also now confirmed their involvement- the mission is being filmed for a 2 hr special.
All the camera crew and directors are being assembled almost real time! I have insisted on using the same cameraman Simon that I have had through all of the Born Survivor & Man Vs Wild shows. Friends matter on Everest! Also the wings are almost with us- we are just buying last remaining radios and helmets we need. Assembling also props, spares and fuel. We need to be ready to ship everything out to Nepal in 4 weeks!
The Alps is our chance to go through the SIV training- i.e. emergency extreme weather handling side of paragliding, as well as test our oxygen and radio and clothing, as well as to fly our actual Everest machines. In the evenings we can go through with Neil all the safety back up plans. On the oxygen note: we are now pretty set on the summit oxygen nasal canula as our back up system fitted and attached to a small bottle on demand feed. With a top-out mask attached to a poisk bottle on 4ltrs a min as our main delivery system. We are going to trial these in the hypobaric chamber in the next week.
Our Interval Hypoxic training will be in full swing by the end of the Alps- where we will not only be breathing rare air for 90mins a day but also sleeping in our hypoxic tents at home...sorry Shara!! We will also be taking a tent out to Nepal to simulate sleeping at 6500m whilst only at 4500m.
Finally we have agreed to use an advanced base camp just under Everest's south flank as our new base camp- this will be in the mountains above Pheriche- this puts us higher up, which in turn means harder take offs and landings, but it also means we are within much better striking distance to the mountain. The communications will be much safer here, the lateral distance we need to travel first will be much less, with our base camp being able to watch the vast majority of our attempt from the ground - hence anticipate any mishaps! It also means we are not trying to search out our base camp through clouds if weather has changed in the further down valleys after we have taken off and headed off to Everest.
This new advanced Base camp is better all round - but the sacrifice is the tougher take offs and landings but it is worth it we believe. Terry Stubbs of adventure x who has much experience of paragliding in the Himalayas has advised this as well. This is how these expeditions work- it all hots up, everyone helps and advises and between us we come up with a plan that will God willing work.
As ever, and as they say in the Royal Navy, 'The Team Works!' Thanks everyone for all your support and well done Nigel, Gilo, Andy and Neil for everything.
Bear x
ps: Off to Iceland then Scotland for 12 days for final Born Survivor & Man Vs Wild shows then all done and 120% Everest focussed...at last!
pps: family coming with Gilo & Neil and me to Alps...will be heaven to have them with me...I wish they could come to Everest but it is too high for the littl'uns and Shara likes warm baths!!

Best wishes. The Colorado Flock of PPG is watching from 6000 feet ASL

Hi Bear, I have seen no mention of the type watch you will be using on your "Mission Everest" adventure. I see you always wear a Breitling Emergency on your TV show "Man vs. Wild, is this your personal preference. So what type of wrist instument are you going to be using. Good luck and be careful outthere. I really enjoyed your "entrance" on your spot on the Oprah Winfrey show. Do you know if the Discovery Channel will be offering the "Man Vs. Wild" episodes on DVD in the future. I have just puchased two of your books and can't wait to start reading them. Thanks Peter
Hi Peter. Yes we are using our breitling emergency watches and hope not to have to use them but they are good security.Meredith Atwood (17/02/2007 04:49:10)
Did you hear about the German woman who has Paragliding in Australia? She got caught in a storm and was lifted to 32,612feet (9,940meters) higher then Everest! She passed out and came to at 6,900meters covered in ice. They say she lucky to be alive. Good thing you will have oxygen with you! Good luck and God bless.
Hi Meridith, yes that was encouraging for us!Ann and Graham (18/02/2007 00:49:10)
Hello Bear! Graham and I Were hoping to be on the support trek and to really be able to see the action first hand!! Nigel at High and Wild was really helpful, but we are not ready for it yet. We wish all of you guys the best of luck and hope that the next time you all try for another record we can be there! Thanks for the inspiration! Best, Ann and Graham
No worries Ann - another time!Mike Johnston (18/02/2007 17:49:13)

Just wanted to wish Bear and his team good luck. We will all be looking forward to your success.
Thank you Celeste.Joshua Hicks (19/02/2007 16:49:10)
Hi Bear- Hope you keep out the cold and keep the oxygen in up there! At least you won't be covered in sea water! Do you have heaters in your thermals & socks, etc.? Do you rely solely on your bottled oxygen at your ceiling altitude? Would love to be there. Paramotoring in the Himalayas would be awesome! Wish you the best of everything for you and your family. May God be with you always!
Hi Joshua, Yes using hand and feet warmersAndy (23/02/2007 22:49:26)
Glad to hear the Everest mission will be on t.v at some point. Am very much looking forward to 'Born Survivor' on C4 next week too. Good luck with the rest of the prep for Everest hope it all goes to plan.
Andy, Mike, Michael, Kevin and Henry- thanks guys xMike Luke Blevins (24/02/2007 21:49:26)
Face Up, Bear! You've got a fan here in Sedona, Arizona keeping you in the occasional prayer -- as well as playing your TV shows in my art gallery on Fridays. (Good conversation starters with the tourists.) You seem to have genuine "heart" in your motivations. I admire and enjoy the fact that you make your adventures as much about your teammates as about the goal. Good Luck! -- Luke
Thanks Mike. Glad you like the show and thanks to Arizona for all the support!Michael (25/02/2007 05:49:26)
Hi Bear,
good luck with the preparations! I've enjoyed reading Everest/North Atlantic Crossing books.
cheers,
Michael

Bear
I've seen some references to support treks in these blogs. What are they? Could I come on one? When do they go, and how can I find out more about them?
Many thanks, V.
Hi Virginia, Please see the entry by Dave Boxall below on trekking to base camp. Regards.Kevin Brown (26/02/2007 13:49:26)
Just saw my first two episodes of Man vs Wild and I am hooked. Now you have another big "fan" to help push you over the mountain. Be sure to properly stowe your tray table when landing. Good luck.

Hi Bear,
good luck hope it all goes well. You and the team will be able to PUFO at the end of May...

Virginia
I thought that I would reply to your enquiry about the Support Trek as I’m leading the support trek.
Anybody can come on the support trek, provided they are in good health and of average fitness. We will be trekking to the team’s base camp, and spending a day with Bear and Gilo as they prepare for their flight. We will continue trekking to Everest base camp and will act as independent observers for the flight as they pass over us on their way to Everest.
The treks leave on the 1st of May, and return on the 18th. Full details are available from the High and Wild website at http://tinyurl.com/yrv9y3
You can get some background about me and my involvement with the project at www.andyelson.com

Thanks Dave, Look forward to seeing you at base camp.Tonda Hinton (02/03/2007 22:49:26)
Just wanted to wish Bear and the team good luck and will be sending prayers that you will all come back safely. My thoughts are also with Shara and the kids - I think she might have the toughest job having to sit back and wait. I would love to make a contribution - how can I do that from this site? Please be safe and all of you come back in one piece.
Hi Tonda, How kind - best to contact Molly at Global angels direct - she is lovely!Veronica Shaw (03/03/2007 13:49:26)
Hi Bear, you don't know me but you know my brother-in-law Jonathon Shaw, I have read your books it was a great inspiration to me as I have just returned from doing a sponsored walk to complete Shackleton's last 112 miles to the South Pole, I found your book a great encouragement. I'll be following your jounrney to Everest and praying for you all the way.
Johnny is following with interest and prayers too.
regards
Veronica.
Thanks veronica - and well done you! Also send love to Johnny he was one of my best buddies and I haven’t seen him for too long!! Great man.denis allen (03/03/2007 20:49:26)
Love your series so far, watching the rain forest one at present. Couple of points, just how large is the TV crew filming you? Maybe I'm a bit slow,I was at a loss as to how the cameraman was able to be at same height as when you climbed tree to get your bearings, and how the hell did they manage to stroll through the undergrowth so easy despite carrying a camera. And when you crossed river to get at balsa trees there appeared to be a camera on the opposite bank already they even had another camera underwater as you waded across the river. Now call me a cynic if you will I prefer that to be taken for a mug.
Hi Denis - all answers for man vs wild on discovery site - I try to keep it separate if I can! That show had 2 cameras as our first show.Rick (16/03/2007 16:49:45)
Bear:
I'm guessing that you're well on your way to getting all the last minute details sorted for Everest. Just a quick note: my wife and I love your show Man vs. Wild. I know some give you grief about the show, but I think it takes a lot of guts to do what you do and make it intertainting and educational. My wife and I wish you and your team luck and success. Godspeed.

Hi Bear,i wish you the best of luck, but remember luck can run out,be bloody careful!,i used to like Steve Erwin too!
Terry Cooper (27/04/2007 12:50:36)
Hi Bear, firstly great to see you on Born Survivor, can't wait for DVD.Can you tell me the Breitling Emergency you wear do you only have one. The reason i'm asking is that i've got the same one (yellow dial etc) but it's only supposed to be splash proof but i noticed you do a lot of swimming/Diving with yours......does it still work it cost a packet and i don't want it to break. Thanks and good luck for the future
russell (15/05/2007 00:50:58)
Bear: just a quick question. I really want to buy a Breitling Emergancy but am wondering about "water". You are always in and out of the water with yours but on the specification for the watch it says its only water proof to 3 bar. This makes it jsut about splash proof if you go by the rules. You seem to have been using your one in the water loads. Have you had any problems. I would appreciate your comments because i am close to buying the watch. PS: you are such an inspiration to me and I am now doing the outdoor adventures I always said I would...
