Off to the Alps to test equipment 4/3/2007
We have now tested our primary top out and poisk oxygen systems in the hypobaric chamber and against all the professional opinions we have proved it works. With 2 hours of pre-breathing to expel all the nitrogen in Gilo’s body, he was successfully then taken up to 30000ft on only 4litres of oxygen a minute and experienced over 97% oxygen blood saturation. This is when he hasn’t even properly begun his pre-acclimatisation programme so hopefully by the time we are acclimatised up to 20,000ft in the Himalaya we should be good, bearing in mind the much greater stress our bodies will be under whilst actually flying.
We leave as a team tomorrow for the Alps to go through our SIV paragliding training, learning basic acrobatic manoeuvres that simulate extreme turbulence. We will also out there be testing our normal paramotors with all our kit, bail out rigs, oxygen, comms, clothing etc., as well as then flying God willing, for the first time our actual Everest machine. All being well we return to build the other machine, do final tests, buy food, ship kit, and then we leave in April! If I am honest we are all quite nervous now…but still hugely excited to have got to this stage.

How do you deal with the apprehension and trepidation of upcoming events. My hobbies include sometimes risky physical activities and I am always looking for ways to handle what usually is unnecessary anxiety. I have read two of your books looking for advise in this area also.

Bear,
Ever since I heard about your great adventure coming up in May, there hasn't been a day that I haven't thought about you guys! It's a chance of a lifetime and I'm glad you're going for it. I know it will be a great success! I am an independent stock analyst and have a lot of free time during the day. If there is any way I could help with generating publicity etc. over here, that might help the Mission and/or charity, please let me know. I want to help tell the world about what you are doing.
Wishing you, Gilo and the others all the best! Godspeed!

Hi Bear and all the team
Wow! What you are doing is incredible. I pray all will go well and that you succeed in this awesome venture. I'm following your training progress and wait really anxiously for the big day itself. I've only just discovered you Bear (on Born Survivor) and am absolutely enthralled. Having researched you on the net I see you give inspirational/motivational talks, but just watching the tv series has given me the will and determination to conquer my own mental and physical mountain. I have battled with anorexia for years and although at a pretty normal weight right now, there's the constant battle in my head just to keep stable. Now I am filled with such hope and determination to fulfil the dream I've long had of climbing Snowdon. The motivation to do so has eluded me for so long as I've been caught up in the hell of this illness, but your wonderful tv series has given me the inspiration to get fit, get healthy and to eventually realise my dream. I'm starting by firstly getting properly well and fit then have planned a short break in Snowdonia in August to do some climbing. Thank you so much for being the inspiration that has in effect rescued me. I wish you all the very best of luck. Please stay safe. Love from Lia x
